Letter from founder

Dear Visitor,

Giftventure is an idea that has been with me for a long time.

One Christmas when I was a young teenager, a relative gave me a present I will never forget. She created an unforgettable experience for me through a series of three unlikely presents. The first two were a single band-aid and a non-descript block of wood -- not exactly the stuff of a teenager's dreams. My Christmas morning was nearly ruined by these weirdo gifts. The third present, to my surprise, was a beautiful set of wood-carving tools.

She'd crafted and pulled off the experience flawlessly. The measly band-aid and block of wood brought my Christmas morning hopes as low as they could go. And so the set of carving tools produced an amplified response, rebounding my mood to a higher point than if the tools had come 'up front' in the conventional manner.

More than a set of carving tools, I realized later that I'd received something much more valuable: an experience wrapped around the present itself. The gift was made special through the experience, and the fact that she'd taken the trouble to create that emotional roller coaster ride for me is all the more dear.

As an adult, I came to appreciate that effective gift giving is a frequent challenge, with three distant nieces to consider. While obligated as an uncle to produce a continual stream of gifts (birthdays, Christmas, visits, etc.), anything I sent them was quickly lost among the other toys and games. To make my presents stand out from all their other stuff, I created adventure stories and mysteries with mythical characters to accompany my presents.

When friend after friend wished aloud that they had the time and creativity to provide gift-related stories and adventures for their loved ones, I thought why not? And thus Giftventure was born.
